Infrastructure
Laboratories
Universidade Federal do Agreste de Pernambuco (UFAPE) offers a cutting-edge, shared-use laboratory infrastructure that supports teaching, research, and extension activities across its undergraduate and graduate programs in Agricultural Sciences.
Organized into five divisions — Research Support (SLAP), Teaching (SLE), Animal Anatomy and Pathology (SLAPA), Food Science and Technology (SLCTAL), and Graduate Studies (SLP) — these laboratories are essential for the practical training of students. They integrate classroom activities, research, and extension activities, including those developed by faculty and students of the PPGSA.
Animal Anatomy and Pathology Laboratory – LAPA
At the Animal Anatomy and Pathology Laboratory (LAPA), activities include dissection and other animal cadaver preservation techniques, morphological studies, as well as necropsies, processing, and histopathological diagnosis.

Molecular Biology Laboratory
The multi-user Molecular Biology Laboratory supports research and teaching activities at both undergraduate and graduate levels. This laboratory conducts nucleic acid extraction and purification, as well as gene analysis through DNA amplification using PCR techniques and visualization of amplicons via electrophoresis.

Animal Microbiology Laboratory
At the Animal Microbiology Laboratory (LabMicro), activities include the isolation, identification, and characterization of pathogens relevant to veterinary medicine, with a particular focus on bacterial agents responsible for mastitis in production animals.

Laboratory of Microbiology, Enzymatic Technology, and Bioproducts
The Laboratory of Microbiology, Enzymatic Technology, and Bioproducts (LMTEB) hosts the work of three distinct research groups, including the Research Group on Bioactive Substances of Natural and Synthetic Origin. This group focuses on the chemistry of compounds with pharmacological and toxic potential, contributing to scientific advancements in the field of bioactive products. Activities include the synthesis of bioactive substances, as well as the extraction, isolation, and purification of natural compounds using classical chromatographic techniques. Preliminary bioactivity assessments are also carried out, employing the Artemia salina bioassay model.

Parasitology Laboratory (LaPar)
The Parasitology Laboratory (LaPar) performs the diagnosis of parasites of medical and veterinary importance affecting production animals, pets, and wildlife, as well as the identification of vectors. Additionally, drug resistance testing is conducted on populations of intestinal parasites and ticks.
In addition to offering diagnostic services in parasitology, LaPar supports research conducted by undergraduate and graduate students (master’s, doctoral, and postdoctoral), contributing to human resource training.

Research Laboratory in Immunology and Microbiology
At the Research Laboratory in Immunology and Microbiology (LAPEMI), activities involve the isolation, identification, and molecular characterization of pathogens of interest in veterinary medicine, particularly bacterial contaminants in animal-derived products and those of public health concern.
LAPEMI also conducts research aimed at developing inputs and immunological tests for veterinary vaccines, as well as rapid tests for detecting pathogens relevant to veterinary and public health.

Ruminant Health Laboratory
The Ruminant Health Laboratory (LASAR) focuses on the identification and prevention of diseases in ruminants, with emphasis on clinical pathology, disease diagnosis, toxic plant studies, and neonatal health. The laboratory also analyzes hematological and biochemical parameters, contributing to sanitary and nutritional management, disease prevention, and animal welfare.
